2. About Bharatakalakshetra
A Legacy of Tradition. A Journey of Artistic Discovery.
Founded in 2006 by Acharya Smt. Anuradha Renganathan, Bharatakalakshetra School of Fine Arts was born from a deep love for Bharatanatyam and a desire to share its timeless beauty with the next generation.
The school's name pays homage to the amphitheatre at Kalakshetra in Chennai, where Anuradha discovered and nurtured her own artistic identity. Inspired by the institution's enduring artistic values, she established Bharatakalakshetra to bring the discipline, depth, and cultural richness of this classical tradition to aspiring dancers in the United States.
Guided by the principles of the Kalakshetra tradition, the school strives to develop dancers who embody technical precision, artistic sensitivity, expressive depth, and respect for their cultural heritage.
Since its inception, Bharatakalakshetra students have earned numerous awards in Bharatanatyam competitions and performed at cultural events and prestigious stages throughout the tri-state area and beyond.
At Bharatakalakshetra, dance is more than movement. It is a lifelong journey of discipline, knowledge, expression, and self-discovery.
3. Meet the Guru — Acharya Smt. Anuradha Renganathan
Acharya Smt. Anuradha Renganathan
A life dedicated to the art, discipline, and heritage of Bharatanatyam.
Smt. Anuradha Renganathan began her Bharatanatyam journey at the age of four under the tutelage of Smt. Madhavi Chandrasekar, an alumna of Kalakshetra and a student of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. What began as an early love for dance grew into a lifelong artistic pursuit, leading her to undertake advanced training at the renowned Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai.
At Kalakshetra, she trained under distinguished gurus and pioneers, including Smt. Pushpa Shankar, Prof. A. Janardhanan, Smt. Krishnaveni Lakshmanan, Smt. Vijayalakshmi Krishnaswamy, Shri Sheejith Krishna, and Shri Mohanan. She also studied nattuvangam—the rhythmic art of conducting dance—with Smt. Kamalarani, recognized as the first female nattuvanar, and Shri Sheejith Krishna.
After completing her postgraduate diploma in Bharatanatyam, Anuradha performed at numerous dance festivals across India and Sri Lanka. Her professional journey extended beyond performance into teaching, choreography-related stagecraft, research, and cultural preservation.
She served as an assistant at Dipaksha, the institute of renowned dancer Alarmel Valli, and taught diploma and postgraduate diploma students at Kalakshetra, continuing as a faculty member for two years. Her work also included assisting Dr. Sunil Kothari with the Rukmini Devi photographic and biographical exhibition in New Delhi during the 2004 centenary celebrations, as well as overseeing archives at the Rukmini Devi Museum.
Her experience at Kalakshetra encompassed stage lighting, stage setting for dance dramas, and publication work, including assisting Shri Rajaram, then Director of Kalakshetra, with the writing of Mahapatabhishekam.
Drawing upon this rich and multifaceted background, Anuradha eventually moved to New Jersey, where she founded Bharatakalakshetra School of Fine Arts in 2006.
Today, as its guiding guru, she remains committed to cultivating thoughtful, disciplined, and expressive dancers—passing on not only the technique of Bharatanatyam, but also the knowledge, values, and artistic sensibility that sustain this extraordinary tradition.
4. Our approach to learning
Beyond Dance. A Deeper Classical Education.
At Bharatakalakshetra, students receive a holistic education in Bharatanatyam that extends beyond steps and choreography. Our approach combines rigorous classical training with the knowledge and physical awareness required to become confident, expressive performers.
Students are introduced to:
Classical Technique — Adavus, posture, alignment, precision, and the geometry of movement.
Abhinaya & Storytelling — Expressing emotion, character, and meaning through gesture and expression.
Rhythm & Nattuvangam — Understanding layam, rhythmic structures, and the foundations of dance accompaniment.
Yoga & Body Conditioning — Developing strength, flexibility, balance, stamina, and body awareness.
Dance Theory & Heritage — Exploring the history, principles, and aesthetics of Bharatanatyam.
Hindu Mythology & Cultural Context — Understanding the stories, symbolism, and philosophical traditions that enrich classical repertoire.
Our goal is to nurture dancers who move with confidence, perform with conviction, and carry forward the classical tradition with knowledge and integrity.

One editorial suggestion: use “Acharya Smt. Anuradha Renganathan” in formal website content instead of “Anu aunty.” It presents her experience and standing with the dignity appropriate for a classical arts institution.
Also, retain the exact spelling Bharatakalakshetra consistently across the website, logo, page titles, and search-engine metadata.
